Self Promotion
Dr. Susan R. Madsen instructs, “[F]or women to advance into leadership roles in business, politics, education, and other settings, they must self-promote in some way.” However, the distinguished professor of leadership and founder of the Utah Women and Leadership Project notes that women often find self-promotion difficult.
Reviewing a scholarly article titled “Women’s Bragging Rights: Overcoming Modesty Norms to Facilitate Women’s Self-Promotion,” Professor Madsen writes that women are socialized to appear modest. She continues, “This modesty, according to the authors, often means denying credit for successes, taking responsibility for failures, lacking pretentiousness, and displaying only a moderate opinion of themselves (expectations for men are very different).
”Two of Professor Madsen’s takeaways are (1) women should boast about each other (and men can boast about women, too) and (2) we can help women practice boasting about themselves.
One more thing, Utah women: the Bee thinks you are amazing!
