Re-Examining the Kinsey Scale

Scientist and sexologist Dr. Alfred Kinsey’s groundbreaking research into human sexuality and sexual fluidity created the Kinsey Scale, a heterosexual-homosexual rating system that continues to influence much of our collective understanding regarding sexuality, particularly through an academic perspective. 

According to The Kinsey Institute, Dr. Kinsey’s, “The Kinsey Reports are associated with a change in public perception of sexuality and considered part of the most successful and influential scientific books of the 20th century.”

But 73 years later, is the Kinsey Scale out of sync with the modern era? With public conversations frequently discussing sexuality beyond the binary, Discovery Magazine’s Sophie Putka looks into whether Dr. Kinsey’s system is still relevant today — and whether or not it remains valid.
