Reasons to Consider Avoiding Hallucinogens

by SARA URQUHART

Hallucinogens can be healing, provide a creative jump, produce an adventure, tap into knowledge or bring connection. With all of these benefits psychedelic use is inching closer to the mainstream. But hallucinogens are not for everyone. Here are six reasons to consider avoiding hallucinogens.

1. Consider avoiding hallucinogens if you have a heart condition. Hallucinogens impact blood pressure and heart rate. Proceed with caution and let your guide know about this condition.

2. Consider avoiding hallucinogens if you are on medication. Hallucinogens can interact with medications. Talk with a trusted doctor prior to use and use an experienced guide if you choose to move forward.

3. Consider avoiding hallucinogens if there is a history of mental health issues in your family. Do your research, talk with a trusted doctor, and inform the guide of any family or personal mental health issues.

4. Consider avoiding hallucinogens when you are the guardian of small children. When altered by hallucinogens your judgement is compromised and you will be unable to make sober decisions regarding the care of the children.

5. Consider avoiding hallucinogens if you are using them too often. Seeking hallucinogens to avoid problems is not healthy and should be curtailed.

6. Consider avoiding hallucinogens if you feel you need to keep the hallucinogenic use a secret. If your use of psychedelics could negatively impact your personal relationships, you should proceed carefully.

With good research, helpful guides and in some cases, a knowledgeable doctor, most of these issues can be mitigated and ultimately lead to healthy and safe psychedelics trips. Each person should prioritize their own safety when making the decision to journey with psychedelics. Each time you are in this space you will learn better how your body and mind react and you will be able keep yourself safe and watch for red flags and possible triggers. With experience comes knowledge, power and healing.
