Set Up Your Home Bar

by DEJA FORONDA

If you are new to adulthood or simply new to drinking, it is time to set up your home bar. You can create your home bar by starting with just a few items. Having these items on hand will be the start to a good cocktail. Having a home bar can compliment social gatherings at your place or even boost your mood for a night in.

Alcohol

You will want to start with liquors to keep in your home. Building out a good stock ,with variety, comes in handy for mixing drinks and catering to different tastes. Having a selection of whiskey, vodka, tequila, rum and gin can help get you started. Brand and flavors are a personal choice but exploring new brands is always helpful.

Another option is investing in wine. I personally love to find good bottles of wine to share with friends and family. When shopping for wine, read the bottle for a sweeter or drier wine and what it pairs well with.

Mixers and Garnishes

Have mixers on hand like sodas, and syrups to sweeten drinks. More expanded mixes could include soda water, ginger beer, grapefruit soda, tonic and a variety of juices. Be generous in your offerings.

Garnishes can be the literal cherry on top. Oranges, lemons, and limes are a staples. Offering edible flowers along side herbs can add layers of flavor to a drink. Blueberries, pomegranates, strawberries or whatever else is seasonal and local can add a splash of color. Colorful straws and drink umbrellas finish things off.

Tools

After starting your own liquor collection, having a good bar set is the next step. Amazon has an extensive selection of bar tool necessities that come in packs. Find a kit that comes with a mixer, jiggers with measurement markings, mojito muddler, ice tongs, liquor pourers, double lever corkscrew and a stand. Having tools near by makes a nightcap easier.

Location

When setting up your home bar find a place for it to live, designate a cupboard, countertop or bar cart. A bar cart is going to give you the extra space for creating drinks and storing your tools and liquor. Invest in a wine rack that sits upright in your fridge so your wine and bubbly is always chilled and waiting for your next guest, a night to yourself or your celebratory moment.

Having a home bar is worth the time and energy. Having essentials on hand saves trips to the corner bar and brings tasty drinks into your home. You can explore what you enjoy mixing and try your bar or restaurant favorites at home. Find the things you like to include in your home bar to expand on the items above and make it your own.
