The Psychedelic Renaissance Continues

by STEVE URQUHART

If you need further proof that the psychedelic renaissance is taking America by storm, take a look at the recently announced line-up for SXSW, the annual cultural harbinger event held in Austin, Texas.

SXSW has dedicated an entire summit (1 of 8) to “The State of Psychedelics” (March 15-16, 2022). SXSW’s psychedelic summit consists of 5 different panels, which cover topics such as psychedelics and the end of life, investment opportunities, tourism, synthetic compounds, and therapy.

Additionally, SXSW will offer 2 feature panels on psychedelia. On the “Psychedelics for Therapeutics and Well-Being” panel, Tim Ferris, Roland Griffiths, John Krystal, and Rosalind Watts will address “clinician-guided treatment of illness, such as depression, PTSD, and addiction.”

The other feature panel—“The Ethics of Mainstreaming Psychedelics”—will address ethical considerations related to the psychedelic renaissance. Ismail Ali, Shelby Hartman, Sutton King, and Bennet Zelner will discuss inclusivity, respect for native stewards of indigenous plants and fungi, and the concept of profit in the psychedelic space.

If SXSW has its finger on America’s cultural pulse (hint: it always does), we can expect the pace of psychedelic use and acceptance to accelerate even more.
