How to Make Blue Margaritas

When you think of a margarita, probably the first thing that pops in your mind is a green lime-flavored cocktail served on the rocks or blended and garnished with a slice of lime and a salted rim. However, there are several different types of margaritas—strawberry, mango, and spicy just to name a few.

Another less common and more exotic looking is the blue margarita. Unlike most traditional margaritas that use Triple Sec, blue margaritas use Blue Curacao. Blue Curacao is an orange liqueur (like Triple Sec) that’s been manufactured on the island of Curacao since 1896. It's what makes the margarita blue and has a sweet orange peel-like flavor with a bitter finish. Likewise, these tend to be more bitter than traditional margaritas.

Pairs well with any Mexican meal, pizza, or just by itself as a summer cocktail by the pool or on the deck. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

·      6 oz. silver tequila

·      4 oz. Blue Curacao

·      4 oz lime juice

·      2 oz simple syrup (see below for simple syrup instructions)

DIRECTIONS

 Pour all ingredients in large pitcher or blender and mix slowly. Do not blend on HIGH. Serve in glass with crushed ice and salted rim (if desired). Makes 3-4 servings. Double ingredients for 5-6 servings. Do not substitute silver tequila for gold tequila.

Simple Syrup Instructions

1.     Stir together 2 cups of water and 2 cups of sugar in a pot or saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. 

2.     Reduce the heat and let simmer, stirring occasionally until completely dissolved and syrup is clear.

3.     Allow to cool. Store leftovers in fridge.
