Must Haves For Your Holiday Bar (With Some Local Utah Options)

by MADELINE FERGUSON

The holidays are fast approaching and whether that fills you with joy or makes you groan a little, I think we can all agree having a well-stocked bar is important during this time.

There are a few things you should always keep on hand to make your festive cocktails shine and so that you’ll never be unprepared for a get-together.

Are you a fan of egg nog? Or do you stick to something lighter like a mule? If I could suggest one cocktail you try to make this season it is a warm, mulled wine. It is surprisingly easy to make and is perfect for a big party (you make it in a crockpot!)

Holiday Bar Must-Haves

Fresh Oranges

Fresh fruit is a must-have to elevate your cocktails and oranges are the perfect Christmas-y citrus to complement the summer-time favorites of limes and oranges. And most bartenders will tell you, squeezing your own citrus is the key to a quality and tasty cocktail.

Another fresh produce item you should have on hand is fresh cranberries, they make a beautiful garnish and the flavor is so versatile when juiced.

Festive Simple Syrup Collection

A flavored syrup can take your cocktails to the next level and having a holiday array of flavored sweeteners is a must for your holiday party. Here are some fun options that would be great with a variety of cocktails:

  • Cranberry

  • Spiced Honey

  • Ginger

  • Cinnamon

Utah’s own Sirop Co. has amazing flavors. You can find them online or at the Winter Farmers Market and at their storefront in downtown Salt Lake City. The Earl Gray flavor is to die for.

All-Spice Liqueur

All-Spice liqueur, also known as Dram, is a lovely addition to a hot toddy or any drink made with bourbon or rum. It is bold and a little spicy with an intense clove flavor.

It can be hard to find in Utah liquor stores, but you can make your own, but you will want to start now if you want it ready for Christmas. Here’s a simple recipe, I suggest adding some cloves to this mixture.

Red Wine

A cozy red wine is a must for tree decorating and holiday movie nights. But it can also be the perfect start to mulled wine, which is a must-have at holiday parties.

You make mulled wine in a crockpot turned to low (that part is very important). You simply mix your wine with some apple cider and add a bunch of holiday spices like cinnamon sticks, cloves and nutmeg (measure with your heart) and let it warm up. Your guests will love this warm and cozy creation.

The Hive Winery in Layton is a wonderful local spot to get wines.

Peppermint Schnapps

Who doesn’t love hot cocoa with peppermint schnapps? This is a great addition to your skiing and sledding adventures this chilly season.

But this flavored liqueur can do so much more. Adding it to classic cocktails like a White Russian or an Old Fashioned can really solidify that holiday vibe.

Something Bubbly

Of course, the holidays are a time for celebration and what is a celebration without bubbly.

You can go with a bottle of classic champagne or if you’re looking for something lighter try prosecco. Prosecco is amazing when mixed with a little orange juice and cranberry juice.

Happy Holidays! We hope you have the best bar on the block.
