Cannabis Licensees Underperforming
Utah has a limited license program, an oligopoly, which means every company awarded the opportunity to grow and dispense cannabis needs to be preforming to satisfy market demands. However, that is not what is happening in Utah.
This week the state agency is going to be reviewing whether or not the winners will each keep their license. Of the 8 awarded only four companies are producing and of those 4, two out pace the rest. We are functioning at a 1/4th the capacity that we should be. This is not what the patients and voters deserve.
"The harvest totals compound concerns about the process," said Justin Arriola, a cannabis business consultant and Utah patient advocate.
“When you see those very low numbers, that’s very troublesome,” he continued. “There are a number of people who applied for licenses, who did have capital, who did have expertise, who would very likely have outperformed those numbers by a very large margin.”
