What is Polydrug use?

by SARA URQUHART

Polydrug use is taking more than one substance at a time or during a single trip. Polydrug use can involve legal medications, illegal drugs, alcohol and other altering substances. It can also be referred to as “multiple drug use” or “multiple substance use.” Mixing substances can be done safely. It also can be harmful or even deadly. Proceed with caution.

People mix drugs for many reasons. This can include, but is not limited to:

  1. seeking a desired effect of one or more drugs enhancing another

  2. to reduce dependence of an addictive drug by introducing a non addictive substance

  3. to decrease the negative side effects of a drug

  4. being altered and taking another substance without thinking through the effects

Mixing substances can be unsafe. It can reduce breathing rate and impact the central nervous system. It can impair judgement, produce memory loss, cause blackouts, and unconsciousness. Mixing some substances can lead to overdoses and even death.

Polydrug use can be done safely. Knowing what each substance can do to your body, knowing how substances interact with one another, and seeking healthy outcomes will lead people to make good choices for themselves.

Taking the time to understand each substance and its effects is important.

Knowing your current health status is vital information.

Ingesting substances that you know about, you know the names of, and know the dosing levels, will help you make informed decisions.

Taking substances from people you trust adds a layer of protection.

Remember, polydrug use will affect each person in a different way. Your height, weight, and health will allow your body to process these substances differently than other people. The amounts of substances taken, the potency of each substance, and a person’s tolerance level will all impact reaction.

Substances should not be taken lightly. The non-addictive plant medicines, when taken smartly and deliberately, can be mixed to produce enhanced experiences. But take this path with caution and experience.
